Like any unsuspecting customer wooed by the
Apple TV sales pitch of getting living room access to my library of ripped DVD movies located on my computer's hard drive, I thought Apple had included the popular CODECs like DivX, Xvid, WMV, AVI and such in their Apple TV product but
this ebay auction made me think twice.
Fortunately, I still haven't bought my Apple TV so I didn't have to pay premium bucks to learn Apple's TV gadget is a severely closed technology deal. From what I gather, at this point, Apple wants to force newbies to use the costly iTunes "movie renting" model instead of having access to their already owned library of ripped DVDs — this is a major shortcoming of the Apple TV.
Sure, Apple wants to milk more money from its Apple TV buyers but it should be clearly stated that ALL THE POPULAR CODECs are supported by the device, when it arrives from the Apple Store.
As the ebay auction proves, anyone looking to view their current video library will need to shell more of their money to various third parties. It all makes Apple look both greedy and blantantly incompetent at properly serving its customers.
And by the way, Apple doesn't even include a measly HDMI cable with their Apple TV, even though such a "high definition" cable can be
purchased for about 2$ + 8$ shipping at ebay!
Apple needs to grow up and get its head out of its (proverbial) greedy beehind.
